Ellen McCormick Martens Artist Statement

I paint vivid and lively abstract work that incorporates collage elements, frequently adding quirky shapes that meander on a visually textured background; they give a sense of movement and play.  A few years ago, I chose to change my art style from representational to non objective abstract because my inspiration comes from inside, rather than from my environment.

I use acrylic paint, which is great for doing collage, as well as being easy to clean up, and safe to handle. Many of my collage papers are created on the gel plate. I love gel printing because it is always a surprise, even when I plan things in advance. I like to work on wood panels so that I can attach the collage pieces easily,  and I have come to enjoy the resistance of the wood under my brush as well.

I make art to follow an inner prompting. My spiritual outlook is related to the mystical traditions of all religions.
